Dear Parents,
Hello! I am looking forward to teaching your child and working with you this year. I want fourth grade to be a very positive and enriching year for your child. I believe that by working together, we will achieve that goal. The following information will give you an outline of our classroom procedures so that you will have a better understanding of your child’s day in fourth grade. Please read the following information carefully, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Teacher/Parent Communication
I check my email in the morning when I get here and after bus call. I will not respond to emails during the day (please note that this is a DCES policy). If your concern is an emergency, please contact the front office or administration if you have another concern that cannot wait until the close of the day.
Lunch
Lunch for students is $2.25. The cost of milk is $0.40. Breakfast is $1.50. Ice cream is also available for purchase during lunch. All ice cream is $1.00. Adult lunches are $3.00. Teachers are not to handle lunch money. Mealpayplus.com is definitely your best option!
Snack
Your child will be given a chance to eat snack during a designated time. Please send a healthy snack (no candy). A water bottle is also allowed—no juice, soda, or sports drinks, please.
Parent Informational Newsletter
Every Friday you will receive a “Garner Gazette” newsletter by e-mail to let you know about the following week. Also included in the newsletter will be upcoming events within the school and classroom. The newsletter will also be posted on my website.
Friday Folder
Each Friday, your child will bring home a folder containing work from that week along with any important papers. Please make sure to go over these papers with your child and correct any assignment that earned a 73/U or below. Please sign and return these papers.
Book Clubs
Each month, I will send home a book order from Scholastic Book Club. This is a fantastic and inexpensive way to build your child’s home library. We also receive bonus points from each dollar you spend to build our classroom library. Each book club order takes approximately one week to arrive.
Birthdays
If you would like your child to celebrate his or her birthday at school, you may send in a snack to share with the class. Please do not send cakes/cookies that need to be cut. We will celebrate all birthdays during our designated lunch time. If you would prefer that your child not participate in birthday celebrations, please let me know as soon as possible.
Attendance and Tardiness
Every school day is an important day for your child to be at school. Please emphasize the importance of regular attendance to your child. If your child is tardy or is being picked up early, they MUST be signed in/out in the front office. If your child is absent, we must receive a signed note when your child returns to class in order for it to be an excused absence. E-mails will no longer be accepted.
Homework
All students received an agenda book on the first day of school. Each day that homework is assigned, students will write the assignment down on the specific day. We check homework every morning as a class. A grade is NOT assigned to homework. This is a work habit. Please check the agenda book each night and make sure your child has completed his/her homework for the night. This year we will not require that you sign the agenda unless missing homework becomes an issue for your child. Missed homework results in study hall time during recess and a “check” on the Behavior Report. Fourth graders should be completing up to forty minutes of homework a night - no more. If homework is taking more than 40 minutes please let me know.
Homework is important for many reasons: (1) It teaches responsibility and time management. This is an invaluable skill that must be taught, modeled, and practiced. (2) It helps your child practice skills that were introduced at school. (3) It allows parents to keep up with what is being taught in class.
Transportation Changes
If at any time your child needs to go home a different way than normal, please send this information to me on the morning of the change. Your child will not be allowed to go home a different way unless we have your written permission. In the case of an emergency transportation change, please contact the front office.
Incredible Cardinal
Each week I will choose a student to spotlight. He/she will share the "All About Me" poster completed at the beginning of the year. You will receive a letter the Friday before he/she is the Incredible Cardinal listing the special attention he/she will receive that week.
